Our Philosophy

We practice comprehensive medicine for all children, newborns to teenagers.  We believe the cornerstones of healthy lives are well visits and appropriate vaccinations.  Sick visits emphasize doctor family communication for proper diagnosis and education for treatment and judicious use of all medications.

Pediatric Health Services

French Broad Pediatrics offers well care for patients ages 0-21 years of age.  Newborn and childhood services, adolescent care (wellness, skincare, nutrition and behavior) Adolescents will have “teenager only” well care days:

  • Comprehensive sick visits
  • Comprehensive special needs care
  • Comprehensive behavioral care
  • Long term care for asthma and chronic illness
  • Minor wound care
  • Inpatient newborn care

Members of the Care Team

French Broad Pediatrics uses a patient centered practice model focusing on individual patient needs and working closely with patients. Our Advanced Care Team is currently comprised of Registered Nurses, ShaeLynn Byas, Lisa Cody, and Laura Woods, triaging patient calls. These same RNs are also our Care Coordinators. They serve patients by assisting the providers in managing patient care outside of this practice.

Meet the Pediatric Care Providers of French Broad Pediatrics

John D. Templeton, MD

A Native of North Carolina, Dr. Templeton moved to Asheville in 2001 and has been an active pediatrician in our community, both in private practice and as a pediatric hospitalist. He received his MD from Tulane University and completed his Residency at Wake Forrest University Brenner’s Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem. Dr. Templeton is dedicated to comprehensive medical care emphasizing time to counsel patients and parents supporting their role as champions of their own health. He believes that communication is key and strives to make patients and parents comfortable discussing any health related issue.

Dr. Templeton is torn between the sea and mountains, an avid mountain biker and backpacker, he also loves to sail, fly fish and explore coastal waters with his family: Heather, Jack and Gray.

Lauren Keely Carlisle, MD

Dr. Carlisle moved to Asheville in 2006 from New Orleans. She went to LSU – New Orleans for medical school and residency, and then stayed on with the general pediatrics department. Throughout her medical career there, she worked extensively with a weight management program for overweight children and their families, and completed a Masters of Public Health in Nutrition at Tulane University in 2003.

Since being in Asheville, she has joyfully worked in private pediatrics, while participating in organizations such as Girls on the Run after hours. Besides having fun hanging out with her family, she loves to read, watch movies, and participate in sports such as running.

Darden Swords, MD

Coming June 2025

Dr. Darden Swords grew up in Tallahassee, FL and earned her undergraduate degree from Sewanee: The University of The South in TN. She graduated from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC and completed her residency at the University of Utah-Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, UT. Following residency, she practiced as a general pediatrician for three years in Pleasant Grove, Utah and then worked at Texas Children’s Urgent Care in Houston, TX. She and her husband, Doug, are delighted to raise their three young children in the mountains of Western North Carolina. She enjoys hiking, trail running, yoga, and traveling.

Molly McDonough-Leota

BA, BM, BSN, RN, IBCLC, MSN, FNP-C

Molly was born and raised in Asheville, NC. She travelled to New Zealand to study midwifery and then practiced as a midwife in Samoa, where she met her husband, before moving back home to raise their 5 children. She worked with area  families as a midwife and as a nurse and lactation consultant on Mission’s Mother Baby unit before returning to WCU to get her FNP degree. She is thrilled to be part of the French Broad Pediatric team.

Molly enjoys watching football, especially when her kids are playing, baking, and road trips.

Sarah Evers, MD, F.A.A.P

COMING AUGUST 2025

Dr. Evers grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. She graduated cum laude from Emory University with a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology and Human Biology. She completed her medical degree at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and her residency training in Pediatrics at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. Dr. Evers comes with 15 years pediatric experience and will continue her passion here at French Broad Pediatrics. She is certified by the North Carolina Medical Board and the American Board of Pediatrics and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Evers has a special interest in pediatric asthma and obesity.

Outside of work, Dr. Evers enjoys spending time with her husband, daughters, cats, and dogs as well as hiking, sewing, and baking. She supports community efforts such as Habitat for Humanity and donates her time working with local schools regarding creating healthy eating habits.

Caryn Bowden, FNPC

Will be joining us Full Time in August 2025

Caryn is a Locum NP that is helping our our practice until Mid July. Caryn graduated from Duke University School of Nursing in Durham with her MSN. She received her BSN from the University of Pennsylvania. She is board-certified as a nurse practitioner.
